How far in advance should you book a private chef?
Two weeks is comfortable, five days is doable, and December is its own problem. What lead time you actually need, and what happens when you have less.

Two to three weeks is comfortable for most dinners. Five to seven days is usually still fine. Under 72 hours is possible but your choice of chef narrows sharply and the menu will be built around what can be sourced quickly. December and Valentine’s Day are different — book those a month or more out.

What changes when you book late
- Fewer chefs. The good ones with weekend availability are the first to go.
- A less bespoke menu. Special ordering — a particular fish, a specific cut — needs supplier lead time. Under a few days, the chef cooks what the market has.
- Possibly a higher price, if a chef is rearranging around you.
- Less time to sort your own end: rentals, extra chairs, discovering you own six wine glasses and invited twelve.
What does not change is quality. A chef cooking on four days’ notice is not cooking worse — they are cooking a menu designed around what is genuinely available, which is often how the best food happens anyway.
Last-minute is worth trying
People assume a Thursday dinner requested on Monday is hopeless. It usually is not. Chefs have gaps, cancellations happen, and a well-described request with a realistic budget gets answered. The worst outcome is nobody replies, which costs you nothing.
What actually sets your timeline
- Your guest count. Larger groups need more coordination and often a second chef, whose diary also has to work.
- Whether the date can move. Flexible dates get booked easily at almost any notice. Fixed dates need runway.
- The day of the week. Saturday is the constraint. Sunday through Thursday is a different world.
- The menu’s ambition. A tasting menu needs sourcing time. A great roast does not.
- Where you are. Dense neighbourhoods have more chefs within range; further out you are drawing from a smaller pool.

Can I book a private chef for tomorrow?
Sometimes. Same-day and next-day bookings do happen, especially midweek, but your choice of chef will be limited and the menu will be built around what can be bought that morning. It is always worth asking — an unanswered request costs nothing.
How far in advance should I book a private chef for a holiday dinner?
Four to eight weeks for December, and six to ten for New Year’s Eve. These are the most contested dates of the year, chefs commit early, and many decline holiday work altogether to be with their own families.
Do private chefs charge more for last-minute bookings?
Sometimes, particularly if they are rearranging their schedule or paying more for rush sourcing. Many do not. It is reasonable to ask directly whether the quote includes a short-notice premium.
How long does it take to get quotes back?
Most chefs respond within a day or two. If your date is close, say so prominently in the request — chefs triage by urgency, and a clearly urgent request gets read first.
